Can VCMA-0420-R22-M-1A replace XAL4020-221MEC? A datasheet comparison

Interchangeability has not been established. These two inductors share a nominal inductance, but a replacement decision also needs electrical test conditions, thermal limits and the PCB land pattern. This is an MST document comparison, not a completed application test. 1. Compare like-for-like conditions Coilcraft XAL4020-221MEC, document 806 revised 25 February 2026: • Nominal inductance: 0.22 µH ±20%, measured at 1 MHz, 0.1 Vrms, 0 Adc. • DCR: 5.81 mΩ typical, 6.40 mΩ maximum. • Heating-current reference: 16.8 A for a 40°C rise from 25°C ambient. • Isat: 18.7 A at a typical 30% inductance drop, 25°C. • Operating voltage: 60 V; maximum total part temperature: 165°C. MAZO VCMA-0420-R22-M-1A, revision A4 dated 26 November 2025: • Nominal inductance: 0.22 µH ±20%, measured at 1 MHz, 1.0 V; RMS is not specified. Table reference ambient: 25°C. • DCR: 5.0 mΩ TYP, 5.6 mΩ MAX. • Idc: 12.0 A TYP and 10.0 A in the printed MAX column, at approximately 40°C rise from 25°C ambient. • Isat: 18.5 A TYP and 17.5 A in the printed MAX column, at approximately 30% inductance drop. • Rated voltage: 40 V; maximum total part temperature: 125°C. 2. The ambiguity that must remain visible MAZO prints current values in the MAX columns that are below the corresponding TYP values. We preserve those labels and values exactly. The document does not resolve the convention sufficiently to relabel them as guaranteed minimum current or absolute maximum current. Obtain manufacturer clarification before using them as design limits. The lower listed DCR is only a resistance comparison at the reference conditions. It does not establish lower temperature, unchanged efficiency or acceptable ripple in the intended circuit. 3. Check the mechanical drawings too Compare the actual PCB copper, solder-mask openings, terminal geometry and keep-out against both recommended land drawings. The recommended lands differ. A similar package-family size does not prove that the existing footprint can be reused. 4. Turn the comparison into a decision record For the actual design, record the switching frequency, current waveform including peak and RMS values, voltage stress, ambient conditions and PCB construction. Define the required inductance under operating bias and the allowed total part temperature. Resolve unknowns before deciding which sample evaluation is justified. Then document the agreed checks for thermal behavior, electrical performance, transient operation and assembly. A passing result belongs to the tested board, operating envelope and revision; it should not be presented as an unrestricted replacement claim. 5.
