QFN test sockets by pin count, body size and pitch
QFN packages have no leads outside the body and an exposed thermal pad underneath, so a QFN socket must match the body size, the pad layout and the pitch exactly. Pin count alone is not enough: a QFN48 can be 6 × 6 mm at 0.4 mm pitch or 7 × 7 mm at 0.5 mm pitch.
Use the table to match your device to a Plastronics QN-series socket, then confirm against your package drawing.
QFN socket lookup
| Package | Body size | Pitch | Part number | Store page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QFN16 | 3 × 3 mm | 0.5 mm | 16QN50S23030 | SKT-QFN16-3X3 |
| QFN24 | 4 × 4 mm | 0.5 mm | 24QN50S14040 | SKT-QFN24-4X4 |
| QFN32 | 5 × 5 mm | 0.5 mm | 32QN50S15050 | SKT-QFN32-5X5 |
| QFN48 | 6 × 6 mm | 0.4 mm | 48QN40TS16060 | SKT-QFN48-6X6 |
| QFN48 | 7 × 7 mm | 0.5 mm | 48QN50S17070 | SKT-QFN48-7X7 |
| QFN64 | 9 × 9 mm | 0.5 mm | 64QN50S19090 | SKT-QFN64-9X9 |
All six are lidded clamshell sockets with spring-probe contacts.
QN-series range
- Pitches: 0.40, 0.50, 0.65, 0.80 and 1.00 mm; custom pitches down to 0.35 mm.
- Lidded and open-top sockets for packages up to 10 mm; lidded sockets for 10 mm to 16 mm.
- Center ground pin standard on all sockets; optional copper heat slug for high-power devices.
- Sockets for more than 80 JEDEC standard footprints.
Checks before you order
- Match the body size and pitch from the device drawing, not just the pin count.
- Check the exposed pad size against the socket ground contact.
- Confirm whether you need a lidded or open-top socket for your loading method.
- For burn-in, confirm the temperature rating and expected insertion life.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a QFN32 5x5 test socket?
Yes. The Plastronics 32QN50S15050 is a lidded QFN32 socket for a 5 × 5 mm body at 0.5 mm pitch, listed on MST Store as SKT-QFN32-5X5.
Which QFN48 socket do I need?
It depends on the body. Use 48QN40TS16060 for a 6 × 6 mm body at 0.4 mm pitch, or 48QN50S17070 for a 7 × 7 mm body at 0.5 mm pitch.
Do QFN sockets contact the exposed thermal pad?
Smiths Interconnect lists a center ground pin as standard on QN-series sockets, and an optional copper heat slug for high-wattage devices.
My QFN size is not in the table. Can you still source it?
Yes. Send the package drawing and MST will check the matching QN-series or open-top socket with the manufacturer.
